So we hit a slight bump on the road...as it turns out, I've got what's known as gestational Diabetes. It's basically caused by hormones that are produced by the placenta at around this time that interfers with my ability to use insulin. The complication is that since I have higher blood suger level, the extra sugar passes to the baby (more than what he needs to grow at this time), his body converts the extra sugar into fat and I end up with a potentially fat baby that is more difficult to deliver and will increase my risk of needing a c-section.
The diagnosis was made after 3 trips to the lab.
The first, I had to drink this extrememly sugary stuff, then they take my blood a hour later. The result, I flunked it badly (which I also flunked with Hunter by the way.)
The second, they took my blood a few days later while a fasted for 12 hours. My results were good, so they send my on to the third test. (if I had failed this one, then diabetes is confirmed at this point.
The third test, I fast for 12 hours, draw blood for fasting level, then make me drink really sweet stuff. They then draw my blood three times, waiting one hour between each draw. (I had to do this one with Hunter as well, but with him, I passed.)
Anyways, the Doctor told me that for the third test, I failed two of the values, so that would mean diabetes for me.
All things considered....it's probably a good thing for me, in the sense that I'll have to eat way healthier. No more sweets like cakes, ice cream, sodas, no more bad white bread and plain white rice. The other positive is that even though gestational diabetes goes away after I give birth, since I do have family history of diabetes, I'll have to be more careful in the future anyways.
I've also did a bit of research online about proper nutrition ahead of time (I have to attend a whole series of classes starting next week)and found out that it's really not that strick on things I can eat. I was really worried about not being able to eat fruit (since it's my favorite right now) I just can't eat quite as much. Also whole wheat bread is good, as well as a type of rice that still have the germ inside that I could accept (anything but brown rice, yuck, I can't stand the stuff). And much to Dad's delight, I have to learn to eat cheese, since it's protein and no carb!
So far, at almost 8 month pregnant, I've only gained 7 lb. People are noticing that my face is thinner as well as my arms and legs. The size of my belly is growning normally according to the doctor. I've been eating more fruit and vegetables since it's what I crave so... since I have "extra reserve" to spear, I bet that's what's happeneing. I hope that the change to a diabetes diet will also help me slim down after I give birth....So I'm looking at it in a positive light....for now! |
